Sydney's water is soft, so scale is rarely what ends a unit here. It is usually a sacrificial anode that has been used up or a failed element, and on a system that is not old both of those are parts rather than a reason to replace the tank.

If your property is on a pumped system, that is very likely the pump rather than a blockage, and it is worth knowing the difference because they need different responses. A blocked gravity drain degrades: it gets slow, then slower, then backs up, and there is usually days of warning. A pump gives none at all. It works perfectly right up until it does not, and then every fixture in the house stops together. Common causes are a float switch that has stopped sensing the level, an impeller jammed by something flushed, or a non-return valve that is no longer holding. The infrastructure is the more interesting history here. Parts of Mosman could never drain by gravity, so low-level pumping stations were built to lift the waste back up into the main system. Chowder Bay's was commissioned in 1926 and served the Mosman septic tanks at Balmoral Beach before the ocean outfall existed. Greater Sydney now runs more than 600 of these stations, and they exist entirely because some ground will not cooperate with gravity.

It depends which one you mean, and it is the first thing worth establishing. The low-level pumping stations across Sydney, more than six hundred of them, belong to Sydney Water and are theirs to maintain. A pump sitting inside a private boundary and serving one property is not theirs, it is the owner's, and that is the one we work on. If your problem turns out to sit on Sydney Water's side we will tell you and you should not be paying us for it.
